About the Course

This course examines barriers, disparities, and facilitators for adolescent retention in substance abuse treatment. The authors interviewed 19 providers in Massachusetts with an average clinical experience of 11 years using the TCU treatment process model. It includes family, client, facility, and policy/system barriers; family, client, facility, and policy/system facilitators; racial and ethnic disparities. It also highlights substance treatment reimbursement programs in Massachusetts that facilitate retention which could be used in other states.

Dr. Acevedo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health at Tufts University. Dr. Acevedo has over 15 years of experience in health service research, most of which has been on services for substance use disorders. She was involved in the development and testing of quality indicators for services for substance use disorders. Much of her work involves understanding inequities in treatment for substance use disorders, particularly those related to race/ethnicity. Dr. Acevedo teaches courses on substance use and policy, data management and analysis for health research, and health care inequalities.

She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Discuss the need to better retain adolescents in treatment through removing barriers and disparities while increasing facilitators.
  2. 2 Identify one barrier and one facilitators at each level, including client, family, facility, policy and systems.
  3. 3 Summarize effective state funded programs to improve retention, and ways to remove disparities.
