About the Course

This course examines problematic social networking site usage (PSNSU) among adolescents. Substance use and abuse by young adolescents has become a serious issue for public health services, and several socio-environmental factors can influence how vulnerable a young adolescent may be to their appeal.
The present study was devised to examine whether substance use in early adolescence is associated with problematic social networking site usage. It includes identifying risk factors such as alcohol, tobacco, and energy drink use, peer pressure and peer posting of images of alcohol use on social media, and effective approaches and strategies.

Alessandra Buja, MD, PhD.
Dr. Buja is an Associate Professor at Department of Cardiologic, Vascular, Thoracic Sciences and Public Health, University of Padova, Via Loredan, Padova, Italy. Her research focuses on public health issues and she has published more than 200 articles in peer reviewed journals.
Luigi Gallimberti, PhD
Dr Gallimberti is a psychiatrist and toxicologist currently serving as the Head of the Addictions Unit at Villa Maria Clinic Hospital in Padua, Italy. He is also an adjunct Professor at University of Padua, Italy, and the President of the non-profit Novella Fronda Foundation. He was the Head of the Addiction Medicine Unit at University General Hospital in Padua and the Head of the Clinical Unit of Center of Behavioral and Forensic Toxicology at University of Padua, Italy. He has more than 30 years’ experience on health, drugs and alcohol issues. Dr. Gallimberti has published more than 30 works in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
