About the Course

This course discusses treatment options in pathological gambling. The gambler was assigned either individual or couple treatment. It includes: revealing gambling behaviors to the partner, the need to develop mutual comprehension and the need for help to attain it, commitment to and regularity in treatment, gambling is a relational problem for many, gambling does not concern the couple in some gamblers’ opinion, format and structure of therapy, and conditions favoring one treatment or the other.

Joël Tremblay, PhD
Dr. Tremblay is a Full Professor in the Department of psychoeducation of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières/Centre University of Quebec. He is co-director of Research and Intervention on psychoactive substances – Quebec (RISQ), one of the most important Quebec research networks on addictions. His research areas include development and validation of questionnaires, study of the effectiveness of treatments in dependence, role of the entourage in the treatment of dependent people, approach motivational, marriage therapies, needs assessment and service models . He has published more than 50 articles in peer reviewed journals.
Magali Dufour, PhD
Magali Dufour is an associate professor at the Université de Québec à Montréal. She works in collaboration with the Research Chair on Gambling and is also involved as a researcher with the HERMES team, the Institut Universitaire sur les Dépendances and the Centre de recherche Charles-Lemoyne. Her research focuses on addiction, particularly problematic Internet use (especially among adolescents). She is also interested in the evaluation, treatment and consequences of gambling addiction. She has more than 50 works published in peer reviewed journals.
Karine Bertrand, PhD
Dr. Bertrand has been a full professor in the addiction studies and research programs at the Université de Sherbrooke since 2006. She has several years of experience in the research community, notably as a regular researcher at the IUD since its creation in 2017. She is also a regular researcher at Research and Intervention on Psychoactive Substances-Québec (RISQ). Her research activities focus on two main themes: understanding the factors influencing the process of change during the trajectories of people struggling with addictive behaviors and evaluating the effectiveness of services intended for them. She has more than 50 works published in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
