About the Course

This course explores the research-practice gap in implementation of evidence-based (EBTs) in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. While clinical trials focus primarily on individual therapy, the majority of SUD specialty treatment is offered in a group format. Clinicians in SUD specialty treatment settings were interviewed. They emphasized the need for flexibility in facilitating groups and explored difficulties managing complex group dynamics. The researchers give attention to the role of social inequities faced by ethnoracial minority clients. Dennis Wendt, PhD
Dr. Wendt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education and Counseling Psychology at McGill University and Director of the Cultural and Indigenous Research on Counseling Psychology (CIRC) lab. He has spent more than a decade working with Indigenous communities developing and evaluating culturally relevant interventions in both mental health and substance use. He has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.
Joseph P. Gone, PhD
Joseph P. Gone is Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (Anthropology) and the Faculty of Medicine (Global Health and Social Medicine) at Harvard University. He has published more than 75 articles and chapters exploring the cultural psychology of self, identity, personhood, and social relations in Indigenous community settings vis-a-vis the mental health professions, with particular attention to therapeutic interventions such as psychotherapy and traditional healing. A fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and of seven divisions within the American Psychological Association, he has served on the editorial boards of seven scientific journals and reviewed manuscripts for more than 70 additional journals in the behavioral and health sciences. A recipient of several fellowships and career awards, he was named a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 2014.
