About the Course

This course explores the research-practice gap in implementation of evidence-based (EBTs) in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. While clinical trials focus primarily on individual therapy, the majority of SUD specialty treatment is offered in a group format. Clinicians in SUD specialty treatment settings were interviewed. They emphasized the need for flexibility in facilitating groups and explored difficulties managing complex group dynamics. The researchers give attention to the role of social inequities faced by ethnoracial minority clients. Keywords: substance use disorder (SUD), group therapy, evidence-based practice (EBP), qualitative research, social inequities, diversity

This course is based on the reading-based online articles, Complexities With Group Therapy Facilitation in Substance Use Disorder Specialty Treatment Settings and Group Psychotherapy in Specialty Clinics for Substance Use Disorder Treatment:The Challenge of Ethnoracially Diverse Clients created by Dennis Wendt, PhD and Joseph P. Gone, PhD in 2018.
