About the Course

Motivational Interviewing is a decades-old but still vibrant and effective approach to helping through the process of change. Beginning at Part III, the second half of this book takes a closer look at the tasks and skills presented in Parts I and II, then addresses additional challenging issues. Part IV encourages and guides further learning to better inform the practice of MI. This course includes Chapter 8 through Chapter 18.

This course is based on the book, Motivational Interviewing Part 2 created by William R. Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD in 2023.

William R. Miller, PhD
William R. Miller, PhD, is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. His research has focused on understanding addiction and its treatment including the interface between spirituality and psychology. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Stephen Rollnick, PhD
Stephen Rollnick, PhD, is Honorary Distinguished Professor in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, Wales, United Kingdom. His research focuses on good practice in efforts to promote change and behavior change among patients, clients and the practitioners who serve them. Dr. Rollnick is a co-founder of Motivational Interviewing and has published multiple books and articles on this topic.

Barbara F. McMillan, LPC

Barbara McMillan, BA, MS, EdD, LPC has 35 years of experience as a therapist, clinical director, and administrator in mental health and substance abuse programs. She holds degrees in psychology and education, and has been a licensed professional counselor and supervising counselor for many years. After 18 years in various roles in private and public mental health settings, she became a full-time college psychology and sociology instructor.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers, and educators. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  6. 6 Integrate ways to practice MI well.
