About the Course

This course examines the value of storytelling in prevention efforts. It includes: Communities Talk, narrative disruption, finding stories everywhere, why use storytelling, benefits of using storytelling, and where to look for storytellers with lived experience.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, Communities Talk-The Value of Storytelling to Enhance Prevention created by Marion Pierce et al in 2023.

Marion Pierce

Mr. Pierce is a public health analyst for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), Division of Prevention Communications and Public Engagement. He works on internal and external communications and national prevention campaigns. He is the project lead for CSAP’s Substance Use Disorders Prevention Engagement Initiatives contract.

Crystal Borde

Crystal Borde is a Vice President and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Practice Lead at Vanguard Communications, a public relations firm based in Washington, DC. Her thought leadership about DEI communication strategies and approaches has been published in Bulldog Reporter and Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) PRSay blog and featured in industry panel events, university lectures and conference workshops.

Joseph Green

Joseph intertwines storytelling and spoken word poetry to inspire his audience to join him on a journey of self-care. His workshops cover youth development, Creative Mindfulness as burnout prevention, inclusion and diversity strategies, youth prevention and recovery programming, and artistic activism.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
