About the Course

This course focuses on combining Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT) with Art Therapy (AT). A framework for Imagery Rehearsal-based Art Therapy (IR-AT) is presented. Participants will learn about the added value of Art Therapy for gaining access to traumatic experiences and breaking through avoidance. IR-AT may be especially useful for individuals who benefit least from verbal exposure techniques. Key Words: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Nightmares, Art Therapy (AT), Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT).

Dr. Suzanne Haeyen (PhD) is professor of the special research centre "Arts and Psychomotor Therapies in Personality Disorders" and coordinator of content of the Master for Arts and Psychomotor Therapies of the University of Applied Science of Arnhem & Nijmegen (HAN).  She has several publications about art therapy with personality disorders and participated in the development of the national multidisciplinary guideline and care standard for the treatment of personality disorders.

Merel Staal, BA in Fine Arts, is a working artist in Nijmegen, Netherlands
