In this ethics training, we will explore the intersections of ethics within the four processes of Motivational Interviewing. Join the amazing Dayna Guido and Hillary Bolter as they partner together to dive deep into the ethics of Motivational Interviewing. Dayna, the “ethics enthusiast” has over 40 years of experience as a clinical social worker, clinical supervisor, trainer, and author of Creative Ways to Learn Ethics. Hillary is a 12-year member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and has a vested interest in supporting learners in utilizing MI ethically. Participants will complete training with a thorough understanding of how to utilize Motivational Interviewing with the highest of ethics!

Dayna Guido, MSW, LCSW, ACSW is a licensed clinical social worker, supervisor, consultant, and trainer. She has a private practice in Asheville, NC specializing in providing clinical supervision and consultation. Dayna has been providing training to professionals for 40 years and was an Adjunct Instructor in graduate programs for 22 years. In her 4th decade working in mental health, Dayna is committed to sharing her clinical knowledge on a broader scope. Her book, Creative Ways to Learn Ethics was an effort to share some of her successful training techniques with helping professionals, educators, and trainers. The book includes 20 different trainings in an easy-to-read guide which can be adapted for professional trainings and work with individual clients, groups, and in supervision sessions. Dayna lives in Asheville, NC. and serves on the NASW-NC Chapter Ethics Committee. She co-authored the book, The Parental Tool Box for Parents and Clinicians. Dayna aspires to use her creative spirit supporting others in pursuit of healthy living.
Hillary Bolter, LCSW, LCAS
Hilary Bolter has more than 10 years of clinical experience and is dually licensed by the NC Social Work Board as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and the NC Substance Abuse Professional Standards Board as a Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor (LCAS). Her private practice location is in Asheville, NC. She is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for intermediate and above levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe the ethical dilemmas present within each of the four processes of Motivational Interviewing.
  2. 2 Apply ethical decision making when determining when to utilize equipoise versus Motivational Interviewing when supporting client resolution of ambivalence.
  3. 3 Summarize the ethical implications of each of the three styles of communication.
  4. 4 Describe the interplay of ethics and Motivational Interviewing.
