About the Course

People experiencing homelessness are at a higher risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, but face limited access to HCV diagnosis and treatment, resulting in low treatment uptake. This review aims to identify the barriers and facilitators for HCV screening and treatment among adults with lived experience of homelessness in highly developed countries. The analysis of several papers/reports revealed various factors influencing access to HCV testing and treatment for this population. Barriers include challenging conditions associated with homelessness, rigid hospital settings, and lack of awareness. On the other hand, flexibility, outreach, effective communication, tailoring of services, and integration of care were found to be potential facilitators. The findings emphasize the need for targeted measures to improve HCV diagnosis and treatment for people experiencing homelessness, with further research warranted to explore successful models for promoting screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Patient and public contributions were made by a team with experience in HCV care and outreach for this population.

Martha Paisi PhD - Public Health Dentistry

Dr. Paisi is a Senior Research Fellow, Research Lead. School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Plymouth, mad a Research Lead at the Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth, Plymouth, UK. Her research focuses on health inequities and health promotion. She has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Crombag is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Development and Regeneration, Urogenital, Abdominal and Plastic Surgery, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. Dr. Crombag has multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals.

Allison Brown holds a BS degree in Criminal Justice with a Psychology focus and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.
