About the Course

The article presents preliminary findings from the "Healing of the Canoe" project, a culturally grounded intervention aimed at preventing substance abuse and promoting tribal identity among Native youth in two Pacific Northwest tribes. Developed using Community-Based and Tribal Participatory Research (CBPR/TPR) methods, the intervention uses the metaphor of the Canoe Journey to instill life skills, cultural identity, and community connection. Early results show that participation in the program is associated with increased hope, optimism, self-efficacy, and cultural belonging, along with reductions in substance use among high school-aged participants. The article emphasizes the importance of culturally tailored approaches in addressing health disparities and supporting positive youth development within Native communities​.

Dr. Dennis M. Donovan is a professor at the University of Washington’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute. He specializes in substance abuse prevention and treatment, with a focus on community-based participatory research. This is his first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Dr. Lisa Rey Thomas

Dr. Lisa Rey Thomas is a researcher at the University of Washington’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute. She has extensive experience in developing culturally relevant health interventions for Native communities, emphasizing youth development and substance abuse prevention. This is her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

  3. 3 Analyze which intervention yielded higher levels of hope, optimism, and self-efficacy among participants, and discuss possible reasons for these outcomes.
