About the Course

This study presents a scoping review of community-based plans aimed at preventing and reducing opioid-related harms. The authors analyzed 100 community plans from Canada and the USA, focusing on multi-sector partnerships, strategies across prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and enforcement pillars, and community engagement approaches. The review highlights common practices such as naloxone distribution, addiction treatment expansion, and public forums. It identifies gaps in evaluation, context-specific barriers, and the inclusion of people with lived experience of substance use. The findings underscore the need for better documentation, meaningful partnerships, and the evaluation of community strategies to enhance the public health response to the opioid crisis.
