About the Course

This quasi-experimental study evaluated the effectiveness of two group-based anger management treatments—Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Present-Centered Therapy (PCT)—for combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Thirty-six male and female veterans were enrolled across six cohorts and received 12 weekly sessions of either CBT or PCT. While both interventions led to reductions in anger and PTSD symptoms, there were no statistically significant differences between the two in most outcomes. However, PCT was associated with greater improvements in disability and higher treatment retention among women. This study highlights the need for gender-sensitive approaches and adds to the limited evidence base for anger interventions in veterans with PTSD.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, A Comparison of Group Anger Management Treatments for Combat Veterans With PTSD created by Elizabeth E. Van Voorhees, Ph.D. et al. in 2021.
