About the Course

This study investigates the protective role of family functioning—operationalized as a second-order latent variable composed of family cohesion and parental monitoring—on alcohol use among American Indian (AI) adolescents. Using structural equation modeling with data from over 4,300 AI youth in grades 6–12, the authors found that higher family functioning was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of alcohol initiation and reduced alcohol use frequency. Furthermore, family functioning moderated the relationship between peer alcohol use and both alcohol outcomes, although adolescents with high family functioning were still influenced by peers once alcohol use had begun. These findings highlight the importance of culturally grounded, family-based prevention strategies to delay initiation and reduce alcohol use among AI youth.

This course is based on the reading online article, Family Ties: Examining Family Functioning and Alcohol Use Among American Indian Youth created by Morgan A. Douglass, PhD Student et al in 2023.
