About the Course

This systematic review examines the clinical correlates of sports betting by analyzing 54 studies that explore sociodemographic characteristics, gambling-related behaviors, co-occurring psychopathologies, and personality traits associated with sports betting. The review highlights that males with high impulsivity are more prone to engage in sports betting and are at a higher risk of developing gambling-related problems. Additionally, there is a notable co-occurrence of sports betting with substance use and other addictive disorders. The studies reviewed predominantly utilized cross-sectional designs, self-administered assessments, and non-probability sampling methods, often focusing on single-country samples. The authors emphasize the need for future research to develop prevention strategies targeting vulnerable individuals to mitigate the risk of gambling disorder associated with sports betting.

Eduardo Valenciano-Mendoza is affiliated with the Clinical Psychology Unit at Bellvitge University Hospital in Barcelona, Spain, as well as the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), where he is part of the Psychoneurobiology of Eating and Addictive Behaviors Group. His research focuses on addictive behaviors, including gambling and sports betting, and their psychological and clinical correlates. He has published his work in peer-reviewed journals.
Bernat Mora-Maltas
Bernat Mora-Maltas is also affiliated with the Clinical Psychology Unit at Bellvitge University Hospital and the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) in Barcelona. His research interests include behavioral addictions and the evaluation of psychological interventions. He has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications related to addiction science.

  2. 2 Describe the role of cognitive, emotional, and personality-based factors—such as impulsivity, sensation-seeking, and psychological distress—in the development and maintenance of gambling problems related to sports betting. Learn how these traits influence gambling behavior and how they may inform assessment and intervention strategies.
  3. 3 Evaluate the impact of emerging gambling technologies (e.g., in-play betting, online platforms) and advertising on gambling behaviors and risk severity. Gain insight into how technological advances and marketing strategies influence gambling frequency, attitudes, and problem severity, especially in high-risk populations.
