About the Course

This study examines suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and intentional self‑injury among American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) college students in the United States using data from the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment (ACHA‑NCHA) survey from 2015 to 2019. Using multivariable logistic regression models, the authors investigate opioid misuse as a potential risk factor for suicidality while adjusting for individual, familial, community, and cross‑cutting influences informed by Cwik et al.’s conceptual model of Native American youth suicide. Findings indicate that opioid misuse is significantly associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation and intentional self‑injury, though the association with suicide attempt becomes nonsignificant after adjustment for confounding factors. The study highlights the elevated burden of suicidality among AI/AN/NH college students and underscores the need for culturally sensitive, comprehensive behavioral health interventions within higher education settings.

This course is based on the reading online article, Suicidal Ideation, Suicide Attempt, and Self-injury Among American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian College Students in the United States from 2015 to 2019 created by Fares Qeadan et al in 2024.
