About the Course

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth and other young people who are diverse in terms of their sexuality and gender (LGBT+) are at an elevated risk of mental health problems such as depression. Factors such as isolation and stigma mean that accessing mental health services can be particularly challenging for LGBT+ young people, and previous studies have highlighted that many prefer to access psychological support on the Web. Research from New Zealand has demonstrated promising effectiveness and acceptability for an LGBT+ focused, serious game–based, computerized cognitive behavioral therapy program. However, there has been limited research conducted in the area of electronic therapy (e-therapy) for LGBT+ people.

Mathijs Lucassen, PhD, MHSc(Hons), PGDipHSc (Child and Adolescent Mental Health), BOccThy (Distinction), DipOT (Distinction) is a researcher and a senior lecturer in mental health at The Open University in the UK. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Rajvinder Samra, PhD
Dr. Samra is a Lecturer in Health in the School of Health, Wellbeing and Social Care at The Open University. Her research interests focus on mental and psychological performance in work and look into the factors (psychological, social, institutional, structural) that enhance or disrupt professional/work performance. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Ioanna Iacovides, PhD (Education Technology)
Ioanna (Jo) Iacovides is currently a Lecturer at the University of York (UK). Her research interests lie in Human Computer Interaction and Games where she investigates how games and playful technologies can be designed for different purposes

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Target Audience

Clinicians treating LGBT+ youth, and working with family members of LGBT+ youth. This course is appropriate to all knowledge levels.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe several psychological/therapeutic needs specific to the LGBT+ youth community.
  2. 2 Indentify how the LGBT+ community uses the Internet as a tool for management of their psychological/therapeutic needs.
  3. 3 Describe how e-therapies are used in behavioral health treatment.
