According to the Minorities’ Diminished Returns (MDR) theory, the health returns of socioeconomic status (SES) are systemically smaller for Blacks compared to Whites. These three articles look at the different ways SES impacts black youths and adults.

Shervin Assari is a Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is also affiliated with the Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture, and Health (CRECH), the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation (IHPI), and Poverty Solutions. Dr. Assari studies how social groups based on race, gender, and class differ in the salience of social determinants of health and fundamental causes of illness. With over 15 years of post-graduate research experience, Assari has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed papers.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Comprehend mainstream SES theory and new data in opposition to that as is it pertains to race and gender.
  2. 2 Acknowledge these studies identify higher SES as a risk for Major Depressive Disorder in African American males.
  3. 3 Identify factors including structural racism that may place African American males at risk for depression.
