About the Course

This course examines cultural competence across every level, clinicians, psychiatrists, administrators and patients. Participants were recruited from the psychiatry department of a major metropolitan hospital in Queens, NY selected due to its hyperdiversity. The participants also included independent practitioners. Focus groups were formed and interviews conducted. Patients wanted the focus on their experiences, not their skin color and ethnicity, while administrators saw cultural competence though the lens of demographic groups. Clinicians favored a person-centric approach. Each group cited common barriers to treatment which were unrelated to cultural competence. The authors recommend a specific cultural tool be used at the first session to form the patient’s point of view that sets the tone of cultural cooperation at the beginning of the treatment process.

This course is based on the article, The meanings of cultural competence in mental health-an exploratory focus group study with patients, clinicians, and administrators created by Neil Krishan Aggarwal et al. in 2016.
