About the Course

This course discusses Gamblers’ Anonymous (GA) as a pathway to recovery in people with problem gambling. Gamblers Anonymous is a mutual aid fellowship based on 12-step principles. This review includes numerous RCT’s studying many aspects of GA, including combination with CBT, combined with pharmacotherapy, its efficacy with women, and people with co-occurring disorders. This is a research intensive course.

This course is based on the article, Gamblers Anonymous as a Recovery Pathway-A Scoping Review created by Andrée Schuler et al. in 2016.

Andree Schuler is a researcher at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals.
Peter Ferentzy, PhD
Peter Ferentzy has a PhD is in social and political thought. He did a history of addiction while in college and after graduation found opportunities in problem gambling. He is the author of “Dealing with Addiction – Why the Twentieth Century was Wrong”, “Dealing with an Addict – What you need to know if someone you care for has a drug and alcohol problem” and co-author of “A History of Problem Gambling – Temperance, Substance Abuse, Medicine and Metaphors”. He has also written numerous articles for the Huffington Post and Psychology Today, amongst other publications.
Nigel E. Turner, PhD
Dr. Turner has a PhD in psychology from the University of Western Ontario. He is a well-published researcher in the field of gambling studies. He has extensive experience in a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods including experiments, surveys, interviews, focus groups, and content analysis. He is one of the leading researchers in the psychology of electronic gambling machine technology and has published papers on the interface between the psychology of the player and the mathematics of the gambling technology (Turner, 2011). In this study it is shown how the electronic gambling games are designed to provide a high level of positive reinforcement in the short term which encourages continued play, but very few long-term winners.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Acknowledge that GA devotes much time and energy to counseling members on financial and legal challenges.
  2. 2 Recognize that GA is different from AA and may not be suitable for every client.
  3. 3 Extrapolate that GA is a cost-effective and widely available resource for individuals experiencing problem gambling issues, and is an accessible treatment option for people of low income and those with gambling-related debt.
