About the Course

The overall goal of this review is to present the state-of-the-science on elder abuse prevention to inform intervention research. Applications for prevention of elder abuse are drawn by analogy from research on child abuse and domestic violence. Jeanne A. Teresi, EdD, PhD

Dr. Teresi is the Administrator and Director of the Research Division of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale and a senior research scientist at the Columbia University Stroud Center and Faculty of Medicine, at New York State Psychiatric Institute. With doctorates in both Gerontology and Measurement and Statistics, Dr. Teresi has over 30 years of experience in medical and social research. She is a consultant-at-large to the National Institute on Aging Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research, and she has been a consultant to the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Statistical Center.

David Burnes, BSc, MSW, PhD,

Dr. David Burnes is the Associate Dean, Academic and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. His research focuses on understanding and preventing elder abuse, including the development of basic science (prevalence, risk factors), developing/evaluating interventions, and developing outcome measures. Dr. Burnes has published many research papers on the topic of elder abuse, including papers in top gerontology and public health journals

Elizabeth A. Skowron, PhD,

Dr. Skowron is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and is a research scientist in the Center for Translational Neuroscience. She is on the editorial boards of several journals and serves on a standing NIH scientific review panel. Her current research investigates the efficacy of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in strengthening biological and behavioral markers of emotion regulation and self-control in parents and their children, for family violence prevention.

Barbara F. McMillan, LPC

Barbara McMillan, BA, MS, EdD, LPC has 35 years of experience as a therapist, clinical director, and administrator in mental health and substance abuse programs. She holds degrees in psychology and education, and has been a licensed professional counselor and supervising counselor for many years. After 18 years in various roles in private and public mental health settings, she became a full-time college psychology and sociology instructor.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists,nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Examine the limited existing research on elder abuse and consider relevant findings from child abuse and domestic violence abuse prevention.
  2. 2 Discuss the challenges to the study of prevention programs from the perspective of measurement and design issues
  3. 3 Describe a conceptual framework for intervention research in elder abuse, linking causally prior socio-cultural and environmental factors to mediating risk factors predicting outcomes
  4. 4 Describe novel measurement strategies for examining risk factors and outcomes.
