About the Course

This article examines the barriers to substance abuse treatment among Latinos vs whites and other groups based on in-depth qualitative interviews. Attitudes toward Specialty Treatment, perceived controls, cultural factors, perceived efficacy, recovery goals, perceived treatment need, subjective norms, stigma, lack of social support, and logistical barriers, were studied among these groups.

This course is based on the reading online article, Understanding Barriers to Specialty Substance Abuse Treatment Among Latinos created by Miguel Pinedo, PhD et al in 2018.

Miguel Pinedo, PhD

Miguel Pinedo is an Assistant Professor in Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas at Austin College of Education. He has an invested interest in better understanding the intersection between migration and health. Overall, his research underscores the importance of migration-related factors in shaping health behaviors, risk practices, and health outcomes. He has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Sarah Zemore, PhD

Sarah Zemore, PhD, is a scientist at PHI's Alcohol Research Group (ARG).  Her areas of interest include the roles of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and economic strain in substance use, abuse, and treatment, with a focus on modeling stress and coping.  She is also interested in treatment seeking and treatment outcomes among substance-abusing populations.  She has published more than 60 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Shannon Rogers, MPH

Shannon Rogers is an epimediologists who works with the Univeristy of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.
