About the Course

This course examines alcohol consumption, brain development, high-intensity drinking, and underage drinking in college students and adolescents. It includes: definitions of binge drinking, acute adverse consequences of binge drinking, prevalence of adolescent binge dinking, trends in prevalence in the US, international surveys of adolescent binge-drinking prevalence, dinking prevalence by demographic characteristics, developmental context, binge drinking trajectories in adolescence, correlates of adolescent binge-drinking trajectories: risk factors and young-adult outcomes, neuro-cognitive consequences, and implications for prevention and intervention.

Dr Chung is a Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers. Dr. Chung’s research focuses on adolescent and young adult substance use: assessment and diagnosis, clinical course, and intervention. She has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals.
Kasey G. Creswell, Ph.D.
Dr. Cresswell is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. Her research focuses on uncovering basic affective and cognitive mechanisms of cigarette craving and alcohol use, and emphasizes the importance of social and biological/personality factors in the etiology and maintenance of alcohol and tobacco use disorders. She has published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals.
Rachel Bachrach, Ph.D.
Dr. Bachrach is a clinical psychologist and 3rd year postdoctoral fellow through the Interprofessional Advanced Fellowship in Addiction Treatment at the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. She has published more than 30 articles in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
