About the Course

This course discusses HIV and substance abusing in the aging population. Other comorbidities examined are alcohol and smoking tobacco. The first article includes: the prevalence of substance use among older people living with HIV (OPLWH), comorbidities of OLPWH, psychosocial influences on OLPWH who use substances, recommendations for care providers, training/continuing education needs for staff in facilities with OPLWH. The second article is a pilot study that examines the prevalence of substance misuse among OLPWH, breaking down specific drug use in the population.

This course is based on the article, Substance Use Among Older People Living With HIV: Challenges for Health Care Providers created Sherry Deren et al on April of 2019 and the article, Drug use among HIV+ adults aged 50 and older: Findings from the GOLD II Study created by Danielle C.
