About the Course

This course examine using motivational interviewing in couples therapy as a way to enhance HIV prevention in gay and bisexual men. MI has been successful in drug treatment. It includes: The need for addressing substance use and HIV intervention in gay couples, existing prevention options for gay male couples, motivational interviewing-a format for brief substance use and sexual health intervention, integrating couples interdependence theory to understand didactic processes in MI, alternative couples based interventions, the Couples Health Project (CHP), theoretical principles, and highlighting strengths in the relationship.

Tyrel J. Starks, PhD.
Dr. Starks is a licensed psychologist in New York State and a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. Dr. Starks joined the Hunter College faculty in 2014 and is now jointly appointed to the Health Psychology and Clinical Science (HPCS) training program at The Graduate Center. His research focuses on interpersonal and relational factors associated with health outcomes (drug use and sexual HIV transmission risk) for sexual minority men. He has published more than 75 works in peer reviewed journals.
Brett M. Millar, PhD
Dr. Miller is a Research Assistant Professor at PRIDE Health Research Consortium, Hunter College CUNY. His research focuses on sleep health, aging, HIV and health behaviors. He has had multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals.
Kendell M. Doyle, MA
Kendall Doyle works at the Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training (CHEST) as a Project Coordinator. Her current research interests include coping processes among patients diagnosed with a chronic illness and their families. More specifically, she is interested in how maladaptive forms of coping and other health risk behaviors impact disease trajectory and overall health outcomes. She has worked on five articles that have been published in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Acknowledge the high amount of HIV infections that continue to occur among GBM, as well as the heightened risk for substance use.
  2. 2 Identify the theoretical underpinnings of MI.
  3. 3 Summarize approaches that have been effective in HIV prevention and treating substance use in this population.
