About the Course

This paper presents a qualitative study that is part of larger mixed-methods research with 87 mother-child dyads (with children 9 to 12 years old). Dyads were administered the Joint Painting Procedure (JPP), which includes dyadic painting by the parent and child on the same paper and is used for evaluation and treatment in the field of parent-child therapy and art therapy. The study’s objectives were to uncover and better understand the unique therapeutic aspects that such method allows and its potential to impact parent-child relationships.

Tami Gavron, PhD.
Dr. Gavron (PhD) is an Art Psychotherapist, a faculty member of the art therapy department at Tel-Hai College, Israel. She is a lecturer at The Graduate School of Creative Art Therapies at the University of Haifa, and a coordinator of the Art-Based Supervision Program and a member of the Emily Sagol Research Center. She specializes in parent-child Art psychotherapy, art-based supervision.
Ofra Mayseless, PhD
Ofra Mayseless is a full professor of developmental psychology at the Faculty of Education at University of Haifa, Israel. She served as Dean of the Faculty of Education University of Haifa and as Head of the National Pedagogical Secretariat, Ministry of Education Israel. Her research focuses on close relationships and children's, adolescents' and adults' attachment and caregiving representations and manifestations.

Allison Brown holds a BS degree in Criminal Justice with a Psychology focus and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who currently works at a Long-Term Insurance company bringing clinical experience to claim processes. Additionally, she developed and continues to lead the Continuing Education Program for Social Workers and Nurses and often leads complex process improvement projects Prior to this, her primary focus was in mental health and worked in both the outpatient and inpatient settings providing support to adults with mental illness.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and art therapists and social workers. This course is appropriate for intermediate level of knowledge.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Apply the therapeutic aspects of using art in parent-child psychotherapy, focusing on unique and highly promising method of relationship assessment and intervention through painting- the Joint Painting Procedure (JPP)
  2. 2 Understand and to shed light on the distinct dynamical process regarding parents and children during the JPP
  3. 3 Discuss how the JPP impacts and transforms the parent-child relationship and how such change evolves during the therapeutic sessions
