About the Course

This course compares traditional 12-Step groups to mutual help alternatives for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). It includes membership characteristics, group participation, cohesion, satisfaction, alternatives to the 12-step model, basic demographic characteristics, lifetime and current alcohol and drug severity, lifetime and current psychiatric severity, current recovery goal, lifetime and current mutual help group participation, current mutual help group cohesion and satisfaction, Women for Sobriety (WFS), LifeRing, and SMART.

Sarah E. Zemore, Ph.D.

Sara Zemore is a senior scientist at the Alcohol Research Group, Emeryville, California and an instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. Her research interests include the roles of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and gender in the epidemiology of alcohol problems; treatment seeking and efficacy; AA and other mutual help groups; peer helping. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Lee Ann Kaskutas, Dr.P.H.

Lee Ann Kaskutas, Dr.P.H. is a senior scientist at the Alcohol Research Group in Emeryville, CA. Dr. Kaskutas is one of the first researchers to specialize in the study of recovery,with particular reference to models of peer support spanning social model recovery support programs through her studies of Women for Sobriety and Alcoholics Anonymous. Her research focuses on Non-professional solutions to public health problems, including mutual aid/ self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, peer support, social networks, community-based treatment, helping behaviors, spirituality, 12-step facilitation, recovery, and feedback about alcohol consumption. Methods include latent class growth curve modeling, ethnography, and scale development. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  3. 3 Summarize 12-step alternatives based on clinical implications, demographics, socioeconomic status, and education.
