About the Course

Researchers are attending to the behavioral health of young people and are wanting young people to have more access to behavioral health services. Digital applications/resources may provide some viable behavioral health treatment options to young people. This is a qualitative study of the challenges in the ethics and benefits of digital/electronic behavioral health services to young people.

This course is based on the reading-based online, Digital Mental Health for Young People: A Scoping Review of Ethical Promises and Challenges created by Blanche Wies, Constantin Landers, and Marcello Ienca, PhD in 2021.

Marcello Ienca, PhD
Dr. Marcello Ienca is an affiliate member and lecturer at the Health Ethics and Policy unit, Department of Health Sciences and Technology. Dr. Ienca's scholarship focuses on the ethical, legal, social and policy implications of emerging technologies. In particular, he investigates the broader implications of new (and often converging) sociotechnical trends such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), big data, digital epidemiology, robotics, assisted living, digital health, social media, dual use, and neurotechnology. He uses both theoretical and empirical methods to explore the requirements for responsible innovation, ethically-​aligned technology design, user-​centered design, and human-​centered technology assessment. He has had multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  2. 2 Name at least seven ethical concerns in the use of digital behavioral health applications
  3. 3 Describe recommendations for better safety and utility of digital behavioral health applications for young people
