About the Course

Intensive treatment programmes (ITPs) have shown promise for reducing PTSD and depression symptoms. However, it is still unknown whether treatment gains are maintained following completion. This study examined whether veterans were able to maintain treatment gains for up to 12 months after an ITP for PTSD and whether reductions in negative posttrauma cognitions predicted treatment gain maintenance. Methods, results, and conclusions will be presented.

Philip Held, Ph.D.

Dr. Held is a licensed clinical psychologist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Rush University Medical Center. He is also the Research Director of the Road Home Program: Center for Veterans and Their Families at Rush and Chair of the Warrior Care Network® Network Evaluation Committee where he leads various research initiatives to improve clinical care for service members and veterans, as well as their families. Additionally, he is the Director of the TREAT (Treatment Response, Efficacy, Access, and Timing) Lab at Rush, which conducts clinical trials and other research to innovate treatments for trauma-related disorders.

Alyson K. Zalta, Ph.D.

Dr. Zalta is a clinical psychologist affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Rush University as well as the Department of Psychological Science at the University of California, Irvine. Her research interests include understanding what factors contribute to the development of psychological distress after trauma, building psychological resilience to trauma, and developing novel treatment and preventive interventions to address traumatic stress.

Dale L. Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Smith has been a faculty member at Olivet Nazarene University since 2008. He teaches introductory psychology, cognitive psychology, psychology of learning, advanced statistics, and biostatistics and epidemiology. His specific interests include cognitive functioning in at-risk populations, statistical applications, and the epidemiology of mental health. He has conducted research on memory, learning and psychological disorders. Additionally, he also collaborates with researches at the University of Chicago and Rush University Medical Center on research involving cognitive functioning in at-risk populations and mental health treatment.

  3. 3 Recognize the major findings of the current study regarding the effectiveness and aftercare trajectory for veterans completing an ITP.
