About the Course

The course examines cultural competence in behavioral and substance abuse treatment in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. This course includes several case histories in the form of story-based vignettes that demonstrate specific knowledge and clinical skills necessary for providing effective counseling to American Indians and Alaska Natives across behavioral health settings. Each vignette provides an outline of the client’s presenting concerns and treatment needs, provider–client dialog, and master provider notes. You will also find practical suggestions and guidance for key stages in the provider–client relationship.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Practical Guide to the Provision of Behavioral Health Services for American Indians and Alaska Natives – Tip 61 Part 1 Chapter 2 created by SAMHSA in 2018.
