About the Course

In the 2020s, many therapists will encounter a transgender or gender-diverse client—possibly clients who are children or adolescents. The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is responsible for making recommendations for the care of all transgender or gender diverse (TGD) people worldwide. The Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People is the primary document outlining the standards of all types of care — including identification as a gender diverse person, hormone therapy for gender transitioning, and surgical/medical procedures for gender transitioning for adults, adolescents, and children. The eighth edition of these standards introduces some significant changes in how all health care providers, including psychologists and therapists, should approach treatment with gender diverse people of all ages.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People, Version 8 created by Eli Coleman. PhD,et al. in 2022.

Eli Coleman. PhD

Eli Coleman, PhD, is Professor Emeritus and former director of the Institute for Sexual and Gender Health. He held the first endowed academic chair in sexual health. Dr. Coleman is the author of numerous articles and books on compulsive sexual behavior, sexual offenders, sexual orientation, gender dysphoria, chemical dependency and family intimacy and on the psychological and pharmacological treatment of a variety of sexual dysfunctions and disorders. He is one of the founding editors of the International Journal of Transgenderism and is the founding and current editor of the International Journal of Sexual Health. He has published more than 100 works in peer reviewed journals.

A. E. Radix, MD

Dr. Asa Radix is a clinician, educator, and researcher whose main area of expertise is in transgender health and HIV. Asa is the Senior Director of Research and Education at Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York University.

Walter P. Bouman, PhD

Prof Walter Pierre Bouman is a medical doctor, trans health specialist, sexologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and academic, specialising in gender and sexuality at the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health. Walter is a member of the WPATH Standards of Care Committee (SoC8) and leads the Working Group on Non-binary Genders (with prof Joz Motmans from Ghent). He is current Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Transgenderism.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, LP

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists,nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  3. 3 Discuss best practices in assessment of adults requesting gender affirming care.
  4. 4 Discuss best practices in assessment and treatment of adolescents requesting gender affirming care.
  5. 5 List two standards relevant to medical care of gender diverse people
  6. 6 Identify three of the medical procedures/options available for gender transitioning
  7. 7 Describe how each standard addresses the specific medical, social, and cultural needs of gender diversity
