About the Course

The objective of the current study is to evaluate PEARLS effectiveness for increasing social connectedness among underserved older adults with depression. The study addresses the following three questions: 1. What is the magnitude of low social connectedness among older adults living with depression who participate in PEARLS? 2. Do PEARLS participants improve their social connectedness after program participation? What sociodemographic and health factors are associated with improvements in social connectedness? 3. Are improvements in social connectedness related to improvements in depression?

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Increasing Social Connectedness for Underserved Older Adults Living With Depression: A Pre-Post Evaluation of PEARLS created by Lesley Steinman, M.S.W., M.P.H., et al. in 2021.

Lesley Steinman, M.S.W., M.P.H.

Lesley Steinman, M.S.W., M.P.H. is a Research Scientist in the Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC), a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center that is part of the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington School of Public Health. She partners with low resource settings in the US and more recently in Cambodia to build capacity for delivering brief, evidence-based behavioral interventions to support mental health and chronic conditions. Lesley’s dissemination and implementation research and practice work focuses on community-based social service organizations that can reach underserved populations, address social determinants of health, reduce health disparities in access to care, and strengthen community-clinical linkages to improve people's health and well-being.

Amanda Parrish, M.A

Amanda Parrish, M.A is a Research Scientist in the Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC), a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center that is part of the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington School of Public Health. She has over ten years of experience leading and managing public health and anthropology research studies, with a focus on helping make evidence-based programs more accessible in underserved communities. Her expertise includes qualitative research and analysis, implementation science, needs assessment and program evaluation, instrument design, writing for and presenting to a range of audiences, leading and co-leading publications, project management and planning, budgeting, supervising, hiring, training, and staffing projections.

Caitlin Mayotte, M.S.

Caitlin Mayotte, M.S. Caitlin Mayotte, MS, is a Research Study Coordinator at the Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC), a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center that is part of the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington School of Public Health. Ms. Mayotte helps coordinate PEARLS technical assistance and training activities, collaborates on other research projects to improve PEARLS dissemination and implementation, and also works on other chronic disease prevention research projects.

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Differentiate between social isolation and loneliness, and discuss the overlap of both with depression.
  2. 2 Describe the PEARLS program.
  3. 3 List at least 3 risk factors for social isolation/loneliness in older adults.
  4. 4 Summarize the conclusions of this study.
