About the Course

This course examines the use of family-based prevention programming on decreasing substance use for Asian American adolescent girls and modifying risk and protective factors. Web-based interventions were used in order to strengthen the quality of their relationship and increase the girls’ resilience to resist substance use. Two year follow up measurements indicate improvements in: mother daughter closeness and communication, maternal monitoring, self-efficacy, and refusal skills, along with fewer instances of alcohol and marijuana use and prescription drug misuse compared to the control group.

Lin Fang, PhD
Lin Fang, PhD is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr Fang’s program of research has focused on advancing the theoretical and empirical knowledge of positive child and youth development through etiology and intervention research as well as community-based research and services. She has published and presented widely in the areas of adolescent substance use, information and communication technologies (ICTs), and mental health and cross-cultural experiences among immigrant communities.
Steven P. Schinke, PhD
Dr. Schinke was a globally recognized leader in the field of prevention science. In a career spanning four decades, he developed and tested programs aimed at helping children and adolescents, principally at-risk youth, to reduce risky behaviors that would compromise their health and life chances. His work was published in multiple journals.

Jacquelyn Knight, MA, OCPSA, CDCA

Jacquelyn received a Master of Arts in General Psychology from Marietta College in Marietta, OH in 2015. She is licensed with the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board as both a clinical and prevention professional and worked in the substance abuse treatment and prevention field in Ohio from 2015 to beginning her current role in April of 2020. Jacquelyn is currently the CEO of a behavioral health organization which operates both a youth residential treatment facility and an acute inpatient psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents. She enjoys volunteering with various community organizations as well and currently serves on her local Mental Health and Recovery Board.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
