About the Course

This course covers Parts III and IV (Chapters 10 through 15 and the Appendix) of the Creative Interventions with Traumatized Children, Second Edition, published by Guilford Press. The book explores a variety of trauma-informed therapeutic approaches and strategies that mental health practitioners can use to support children’s recovery from a broad range of traumatic experiences, including parental loss, child abuse, family violence, bullying, and mass trauma. The second edition includes updated information on the neurobiological basis of trauma responses and evidence supporting creative therapeutic approaches. It also addresses topics such as mindfulness, resilience, post-traumatic growth, stress reduction, and dissociation. Therapies discussed include play therapy, art therapy, music therapy, movement therapy, drama therapy, bibliotherapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). In addition, the book provides guidance on crisis intervention and prevention strategies, along with valuable resources for clinicians.

This course is based on Chapters 10 through 15 of the book, Creative Interventions With Traumatized Children created by Cathy A. Malchiodi, PhD, ATR-BC, LPCC, LPAT, REAT in 2021.
