About the Course

This course covers part one of the 8th revised edition of a research-based manual on using EMDR for the treatment of chronic pain. In this section, participants will explore the complex interplay between trauma, attachment issues, and chronic pain, alongside the neurological underpinnings of pain. The course introduces a theoretical model of pain rooted in the accelerated information processing model.

Part one focuses on understanding pain as a psychological phenomenon, tracing its evolution from early concepts like hysteria to modern trauma-informed approaches. Participants will learn how pain can result from multiple factors, including attachment deficits, trauma, complex health conditions, and even medical interventions. The course also delves into dissociative processes—ranging from everyday shifts in consciousness to structural dissociation—and recent insights into brain function and structure. By the end of this section, participants will gain an understanding of the effects of severe stress on the brain and how EMDR meets many criteria for neurobiologically informed psychotherapy.

Note: Part two, covered in a separate course, provides a detailed and adaptable EMDR pain protocol, supported by 30 years of research and practice. The manual also includes over 30 pages of practical treatment aids and resources for both therapists and clients.

This course is based on the book, Pain Control With EMDR Part I created by Mark Grant, M.A. in 2023.

Mark Grant, M.A.
Mark Grant is an Australian psychologist and researcher with 30 years of clinical experience, specializing in trauma survivors and stress-related health issues like chronic pain, fatigue, and IBS. His research on using EMDR for chronic pain has led to several peer-reviewed publications. Mark developed the Anxiety Release app, which was the first to report the complete resolution of chronic pain through an app. He also co-authored two chapters on EMDR and pain for the Oxford University Press Handbook of EMDR (2023). His latest research (2022) involves a randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigating the effectiveness of apps for addressing PTSD.

Robert Yourell, LMFT

Robert is an LMFT and EAP certiifed clinician with over 20 years of experience. He was trained in EMDR by Francine Shapiro in 1992 and holds Level 1 and 2 EMDR certifications. He produced the first sound (UpLevel) widely used as bilateral stimulation.

  3. 3 Explore the theoretical model of pain based on accelerated information processing and the evolution of pain as a psychological issue, from early theories to modern trauma-informed models.
  4. 4 Examine the range of dissociative processes, from everyday changes in consciousness to structural dissociation, and their relevance to chronic pain.
  5. 5 Analyze how EMDR fulfills the criteria for a neurobiologically informed psychotherapy and apply treatment aids and resources to enhance therapy for chronic pain.
