About the Course

This course is part two of the 8th revised edition of a comprehensive, research-based manual on using EMDR for chronic pain. It provides a flexible, step-by-step protocol, detailed notes, and tips for each stage of the process, along with key differences between the trauma and pain protocols. Participants will learn methods to enhance client responsiveness to bilateral stimulation, develop strong affect-based resources for coping with ongoing pain, and explore adjunctive strategies and tools to optimize treatment outcomes.

The course also covers assessment tools, information on dissociation and pain, and numerous case examples. Participants will gain extensive knowledge about the history-taking, assessment, and preparation phases of EMDR treatment for chronic pain, including how to develop workable EMDR targets, manage blockages, and use bilateral stimulation to reduce pain. Eight key differences between the standard trauma protocol and the pain protocol are identified and summarized. Given the complex nature of chronic pain, the course emphasizes the importance of adjunctive strategies such as hypnosis, ego state work, and somatic interventions to supplement EMDR.

Part One of this course, available separately, reviews the role of trauma and attachment issues in pain, neurological aspects of pain, and a theoretical model based on the accelerated information processing model. The manual also includes over 30 pages of treatment aids and resources for therapists and clients.

This course is based on the book, Pain Control With EMDR Part 2 created by Mark Grant, M.A. in 2023.

Course Material Author

Mark Grant, M.A.
Mark Grant is an Australian psychologist and researcher with 30 years of clinical experience, specializing in trauma survivors and stress-related health issues like chronic pain, fatigue, and IBS. His research on using EMDR for chronic pain has led to several peer-reviewed publications. Mark developed the Anxiety Release app, which was the first to report the complete resolution of chronic pain through an app. He also co-authored two chapters on EMDR and pain for the Oxford University Press Handbook of EMDR (2023). His latest research (2022) involves a randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigating the effectiveness of apps for addressing PTSD.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Implement a flexible, step-by-step EMDR protocol tailored for chronic pain, including comprehensive history-taking, assessment, and target development.
  2. 2 Differentiate between the standard trauma protocol and the EMDR pain protocol, and apply techniques such as bilateral stimulation to reduce pain.
  3. 3 Identify and navigate common blockages in chronic pain treatment, integrating adjunctive strategies like hypnosis, ego state work, and somatic interventions.
  4. 4 Apply affect-based and somatically-focused interventions to help clients cope with ongoing pain, while installing resources and future templates for long-term management.
  5. 5 Analyze case examples, assess dissociation, and utilize treatment aids and resources provided in the course to enhance EMDR practice for chronic pain.
