About the Course

This session explores how resilience is conceptualized and applied among transition-age youth (ages 16–29) living with serious mental illness (SMI). Drawing on a comprehensive scoping review of 24 studies, participants will examine multiple research traditions—including stress adaptation, person-environment interactions, recovery-focused models, and critical/cultural perspectives—and the varied ways resilience has been defined, measured, and operationalized. The course highlights tensions and knowledge gaps in current literature, emphasizing the need for intersectional, youth-engaged research approaches that recognize sociocultural and systemic influences on resilience. Practical implications for mental health services and future research directions are also discussed.

This course is based on the reading online article, A Scoping Review of Resilience Among Transition-age Youth With Serious Mental Illness created by Amy E. Nesbitt et al in 2023.

This is a technical research course, meaning the material contains a lot of source data and citations. Many members like this, but if you don't, you might want to choose a different course.
