About the Course

This course examines the impact of psychiatric and substance use histories on the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) among racially and ethnically diverse older adults in the United States. Drawing on national data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers, the study highlights how conditions such as depression, traumatic brain injury, and alcohol use increase dementia risk—and how these patterns vary by race and ethnicity. Findings underscore the importance of addressing modifiable psychiatric risk factors to reduce disparities in dementia onset.
