Trauma-related Symptoms in Adolescents: the Differential Roles of Sexual Abuse and Mentalizing

About the Course

This study investigated the independent and combined effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and mentalizing (measured via reflective functioning) on trauma-related symptoms in adolescent psychiatric inpatients. Using structural equation modeling with a sample of 273 adolescents aged 12–17, the researchers examined a latent variable composed of post-traumatic stress, borderline personality features, and sexual concerns. They found that both CSA and mentalizing significantly contributed to trauma-related symptoms, with mentalizing explaining more variance (16.7%) than CSA (5%). This suggests that mentalizing functions as a resilience factor, and interventions aimed at enhancing mentalizing—such as Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT)—may reduce trauma-related symptoms even among adolescents exposed to CSA.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Trauma-related Symptoms in Adolescents: the Differential Roles of Sexual Abuse and Mentalizing created by Marissa Wais et al. in 2024.
