1.5 CE Hours

This timely program will be presented by Jay Berk, Ph.D., psychologist and expert in the area of child and adolescent therapy as well as electronic and gaming addiction. He is the author of two books in this area and has presented both nationally and internationally on this topic.

This program will be for beginning through expert therapists and provide an overview of game construction and methodologies that "hook" children and adolescents.

Dr. Berk will be taking the position that gaming itself can be a healthy pastime for many children and adolescents but will talk about the continuum of difficulty ranging from healthy use to problematic through addiction in users.

In understanding the construction of electronics and the psychology behind them, Dr. Berk will explain how many games are constructed similar to gambling, such as the “near miss” phenomenon, “loot boxes”, “grinding vs. pay to win”, and especially the social aspect of how gaming becomes part of the child or adolescent's life.

Dr. Berk will also focus information on social media and how children and adolescents may have distorted views of other's lives and situations based on their perception of social media. He will talk about important technology addiction strategies such as the “like” button and the “continuous scroll”.

Dr. Berk will then focus the seminar on practical strategies for interventions after one understands the constructs that create a "hook". The next part is understanding the interventions related to the individual person. Dr. Berk's unique perspective in this area, specifically targets the reason behind the technology issue, for example, social anxiety, need to be perfect, dopamine rush, etc.

Clinicians will leave this seminar with strategies to implement with clients as well as parents of clients as the interventions generally must be simultaneous to have the success that one is seeking.

Dr. Berk is ranked overall extremely high by attendees for the practical nature of his programs.

If you work with children and adolescents you can't help but attend this program as it will be directed at the DIGITAL LANDSCAPE currently in place, including:

  1. Information about children at home working remotely and isolated seeking more electronic media use
  2. Theft from parents to buy things in video games
  3. The concept of digital native, i.e., children and adolescents know much more than their parents, who are digital visitors.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe gaming mechanics: Why kids get hooked
  2. Describe the constructs of gaming that create our likelihood of over-consumption/addiction
  3. Explain social media and understand the constructs associated with social media that create more likelihood of child and adolescent over-usage.

The successful management of resistance is the pivotal point of effective therapy. It is also a critical component in alleviating therapists’ stress. Although most therapists have been trained extensively in theoretical approaches, few have had extensive training in dealing with resistance. This plenary will review many aspects of therapeutic resistance including historic definitions and present a model for resistance that empowers therapists in managing the problem. This is followed by fundamental principles and techniques for avoiding and resolving resistance. The techniques presented are applicable across a wide array of clients and problems and can be integrated with all theoretical approaches.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between conventional and modern definitions of resistance. Participants will be able to conceptualize resistance in a manner that empowers them to avoid, circumvent, and utilize it for client benefit.
  2. Describe and understand the most common errors therapists make that foster and promote client resistance.
  3. Identify basic, overriding principles for dealing with resistance in therapeutic environments. Explain the importance of tending to each principle in therapeutic relationships in order to tactfully manage resistance.

The purpose of this keynote session is to explore how behavioral health services with adolescents and young adults is significantly influenced by a series of major movements or trends. These movements, which include a focus on well-being, evidence-based practice, treatment outcomes, provider effects, and specialized approaches, are concurrent with a worldwide emphasis on prevention, health, and education, and provide direction for the future of behavioral health. In this keynote session, we will explore five research-based principles that underscore these major movements and serve as a foundation for effective services. In doing so, we will consider the influence historical figures and recent innovators in psychology and psychotherapy have had on the development of current treatment perspectives and practices. Participants will also be introduced to specific processes and practices for helping adolescents and young adults to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to identify at least two significant trends in behavioral health services with adolescents and young adults
  2. Participants will be able to describe two strategies to improve the benefit of therapy to adolescents and young adults.
  3. Participants will be able to identify two specific focuses that are correlated with improved outcomes with adolescents and young adults.

The world of emerging adults, leaving high school or college to enter a new world of responsibility for one’s own decisions (and the consequences) can be a time of paralyzing anxiety. Isolation demands of COVID-19 brought many young adults back to family homes. The impact of this retreat from jobs and schools has shaken confidence, especially in those who have suffered some measure of social anxiety. In 2021, as they emerge from the virus restrictions, young adults will be faced with managing anxiety about re-entering the social realms of universities and jobs. They may suffer panic about physical safety depending on their level of health anxiety and the realities that the virus will be around for some time. In this session, Dr. Wehrenberg will review panic management and health anxiety protocols that really work and will focus on handling social anxiety and worry for young adults.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Apply the Prevent Panic Protocol for panic and social anxiety situations
  2. Interrupt worry and form effective counter cognitions
  3. Formulate and apply a plan to reduce social anxiety and develop confidence

If I asked, “what you do for a living?” Each of you would have an understandably different response. For the sake of this presentation, let’s use the following as our job description. Our job is to help struggling people gain the needed insight, objectivity, resources and strength to improve their lives. Few among us would deny this. And yet, despite our sincere desire to help others grow, we miss things. We forget an important assessment questions, we double book or forget to update treatment plans. No big deal, we are not perfect,

But what happens when we miss out important assessment pieces due to our discomfort or lack of knowledge? What if SEX (never discussed) is at the heart of the clients’ concern, but they are too ashamed to bring it up Sexual problems and fears are the least likely issues our clients will bring to us likely due to how they perceive we might respond. Thus. the focus of this talk, SEX. Do you feel comfortable/knowledgeable enough to evaluate your clients’ sexual lives? Are your initial assessments inclusive of a sexual history? When clients generate concerns related to sexual fetishism, porn addiction, gender identity, gender expression and child porn, what do you do? This discussion is meant to help clinicians become better at what they do.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Differentiate sexual fetishism from sexual orientation
  2. Describe 2-3 options for pursing further professional education into human sexuality
  3. Utilize 5 questions about sex to incorporate into their assessment.

Prior to COVID-19, telehealth was often used as an alternative to in-person care, to maintain continuity of care, or in combination. Given the current climate of COVID-19 and the rapidly changing landscape of treatment implementation, telehealth has become the go-to method of delivery for mental health services. Telehealth has become useful for providing cognitive behavioral therapy to young children to adults, and in various formats (i.e., individual, group, intensive). This quick demand for telehealth need has also placed pressure on improving regulations and laws related to telehealth within and across state lines. This webinar will describe examples of how telehealth can be used to provide evidence-based care in clinical and research settings for a variety of disorders and presentations. Examples of cases using telehealth with evidence-based treatments will be presented. Ethical considerations when using telehealth such as consenting, privacy, HIPAA compliance, interjurisdictional practice, and appropriateness of clients for telehealth services, particularly the changes that may have occurred regarding COVID-19.

Learning Objectives

After taking this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss the research base and clinical practice of telehealth for evidence-based treatments.
  2. Describe adaptations to treatment when conducting evidence-based care via telehealth.
  3. Discuss ethical considerations and privacy concerns when implementing evidence-based care via telehealth.
