About the Event

This timely program will be presented by Jay Berk, Ph.D., psychologist and expert in the area of child and adolescent therapy as well as electronic and gaming addiction. He is the author of two books in this area and has presented both nationally and internationally on this topic.

This program will be for beginning through expert therapists and provide an overview of game construction and methodologies that "hook" children and adolescents.

Dr. Berk will be taking the position that gaming itself can be a healthy pastime for many children and adolescents but will talk about the continuum of difficulty ranging from healthy use to problematic through addiction in users.

In understanding the construction of electronics and the psychology behind them, Dr. Berk will explain how many games are constructed similar to gambling, such as the “near miss” phenomenon, “loot boxes”, “grinding vs. pay to win”, and especially the social aspect of how gaming becomes part of the child or adolescent's life.

Dr. Berk will also focus information on social media and how children and adolescents may have distorted views of other's lives and situations based on their perception of social media. He will talk about important technology addiction strategies such as the “like” button and the “continuous scroll”.

Dr. Berk will then focus the seminar on practical strategies for interventions after one understands the constructs that create a "hook". The next part is understanding the interventions related to the individual person. Dr. Berk's unique perspective in this area, specifically targets the reason behind the technology issue, for example, social anxiety, need to be perfect, dopamine rush, etc.

Clinicians will leave this seminar with strategies to implement with clients as well as parents of clients as the interventions generally must be simultaneous to have the success that one is seeking.

Dr. Berk is ranked overall extremely high by attendees for the practical nature of his programs.

If you work with children and adolescents you can't help but attend this program as it will be directed at the DIGITAL LANDSCAPE currently in place, including:

  1. Information about children at home working remotely and isolated seeking more electronic media use
  2. Theft from parents to buy things in video games
  3. The concept of digital native, i.e., children and adolescents know much more than their parents, who are digital visitors.

Live Event This is a live online event. It will be conducted via Zoom Webinar.
