About the Course

This course examines demographic trends in cannabis use in the older adult population through the use of geriatric epidemiology. Cannabis use in on the rise in a population with existing chronic conditions due to their age. The adverse effects of this combinations remains to be fully expressed. The findings from this study highlight the imperative to screen older adults for substance use.

This course is based on the article, Demographic trends among older cannabis users in the United States, 2006–13 created by Benjamin H. Han et al. in 2017.

Benjamin H. Han
Benjamin Han is a geriatrician and health services researcher in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care and the Department of Population at NYU Langone Health. His research focuses on unhealthy substance use among older adults, and caring for adults with multiple chronic conditions in opioid treatment programs.
Scott Sherman, MD, MPH
Dr. Sherman’s main area of interest is how to redesign health care systems to better help people quit smoking. He is particularly focused on Translational Studies, which examine the effectiveness of interventions in routine practice, as well as how to disseminate and implement them. Dr. Sherman is currently PI/MPI of seven major grants. He is currently Professor of Population Health, Medicine and Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine and Co-Chief of the Section of Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug Use
Pia M. Mauro
Dr. Pia M. Mauro is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University. Her research focuses on substance use epidemiology, access to substance use and mental health services, behavioral health treatment integration and co-location, as well as structural and policy impacts on substance use and treatment. She is interested in health equity and working with vulnerable populations (e.g., juveniles in drug court, older adults, racial/ethnic minorities, immigrant populations, people with mental illness, people using substances).

Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.
