About the Course

This course discusses some special challenges clinician’s may face when working with populations that may be considered undeserving of services. The two articles in this course discuss moral dilemmas that may be encountered by professionals as well as some of the distinctions drawn between deserving and underserving clients.

This course is based on the article, Moral Dilemmas in Care for the Homeless: What Issues Do Professionals Face, How Do They Deal With Them, and Do They Need Ethics Support? created by Ruth P. Spijkerboer, Ph.D. et al. in 2016 and the article Deserving to Deserve: Challenging Discrimination Between the Deserving and Undeserving in Social Work created byJohn Solas, B.A., BSW, Ph.D. in 2018.

Ruth P. Spijkerboer, Ph.D. Candidate
Ruth is on the Faculty of Social Science and Applied Psychology at Leiden University. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Guy A. M. Widdershoven, Ph.D.
Guy AM Widdershoven is a Professor of Ethics of Health Care at Maastricht University. He supervises research projects on ethics of chronic care (care for the elderly, psychiatry, care for people with a mental disability). Together with psychiatrists he coordinated a nationwide program in The Netherlands to reduce coercion and constraint in psychiatry. He supervised projects concerning the theory and methodology of empirical ethics. He also supervised projects on ethical aspects of care around the end of life, particularly palliative care and euthanasia. He has organized many international conferences on ethical issues in healthcare. He published articles in international journals and edited various international volumes.
John Solas, B.A., BSW, Ph.D.
Dr. Solas is a senior lecturer in the school of Social Work and Social Care at University of Bradford. His teaching and research interests include applied and professional ethics, moral and political philosophy, and organizational behavior.

Hana Kuc is a Licensed Mental Heath counselor and a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor who has been working in the field for 13 years. In that time she has worked as a counselor, therapist, educator and director. Hana has specialized in working with clients on medication assisted treatment, who are in recovery from opiates, and are also diagnosed with a mental health disorder.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Summarize previous research on moral dilemmas that professionals face.
  2. 2 Describe the qualitative study research questions, methods and results.
  3. 3 Discuss conclusions and the kinds of moral dilemmas professionals face as well as what helps them deal with those.
  4. 4 Summarize historical theories of desert.
  5. 5 Discuss how a value laden understanding of desert continues to exert influence on state-sponsored welfare.
