About the Course

This course examines the expanding use of Kratom in the US through two articles. The drug has similar effects to both opioids and stimulants depending upon preparation. The active ingredient in Kratom is approximately 46 times more potent than that of mitragynine and 13 times more potent than morphine. Polydrug use is associated with over 80% of the overdose deaths, including prescribed medications treating bi-polar disorder. Kratom’s potential to mitigate opioid use is also discussed.

Dr. Eastlack completed his PhD at LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA and is working on his residency at NC Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Anesthesiology Residency. He has spent his academic life doing research and has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
Charles Veltri, PhD.
Dr. Veltri is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, Midwestern University, Glendale, AZ. He has published more than 10 articles on Kratom.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
