About the Course

This course address substance use disorder in veterans. It examines cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and integrative therapy in a group therapy format. Treatment outcome was measured by drug screens (UDS), the Quality of Life Inventory, the knowledge and feedback form, substance use and treatment outcomes, and treatment retention.

Kathryn Polak is a graduate student in the clinical psychology program at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Meyer is a Clinical Psychologist and the Psychology Program Manager for Community-Based Outpatient Clinics at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Meyer has worked in the child welfare and the child and adult mental health fields as a clinician, administrator, teacher, policy maker, program developer, expert witness, researcher, consultant, and trainer. Dr. Meyer is also a nationally in-demand speaker who has given over 300 presentations and trainings on a wide range of content areas including the treatment of trauma and co-morbid conditions, substance abuse, complex trauma, the effects of trauma and substance abuse on families, Veterans’ mental health, mindfulness meditation, secondary traumatization and self-care, and collaborative courts.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
