About the Course

This research intensive course focuses on early-life Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Substance Use Disorder (SUDD). It includes: animal models of addiction, TBI and the young brain, clinical and epidemiological data on early-life TBI, preclinical studies (animal models of TBI), development and maturation of the reward pathway, TBI neuropathology and neuroinflammation in the addiction pathway, anatomical alterations following TBI in the maturing brain, induction of inflammatory markers, blood-brain barrier hyper-permeability, synaptic alterations, changes to the dopaminergic system, TBI and addiction, Clinical history of TBI and susceptibility to SUD, preclinical evidence of SUD risk following early-life TBI, the possible mechanistic role of Orexin in TBI and SUD, and confounding variables of TBI-related SUD. This course is neuroscience intensive.

Lee Anne Cannella, PhD

Dr. Cannella has done research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA; Center for Substance Abuse Research, The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. Her work focuses on traumatic brain injuries and has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Hannah McGary

Hannah joined the Ramirez lab in May 2018 as a Laboratory Technician and is now an Assistant Scientist. Hanna’s expertise is in animal models for addiction-like behavior and experimental TBI. Her work has been published in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
