Marilou Gagnon, RN, PhD
Dr. Marilou Gagnon is a Professor at the School of Nursing, Faculty of Human and Social Development at the University of Victoria and Scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR). Her program of research seeks to address gaps in knowledge that have the potential to inform public debate and policies, while also advancing the rights and the health of marginalized communities. Her program of research focuses on three axes: The first axis concerns structures that create inequities and injustices. The second axis takes an in-depth look at the government (management) of risk, bodies and behaviours. The third axis examines issues related to the health equity and social justice. More specifically, she is interested in improving access to care. She is also the co-president of the Nursing Observatory and Past President of the Harm Reduction Nurses Association.
Alayna Payne
Alayna Payne is a research assistant at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research, University of Victoria. Her previous articles have focused on prize based interventions and her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Adrian Guta, PhD
Dr. Adrian Guta is Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Windsor. Dr. Guta is a member of the Capacity Research Unit at the University of British Columbia and an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University, Department of Health Sciences. Dr. Guta regularly partners with community and clinical partners to design research studies which meet the needs of patients and service users. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.

Barbara McMillan, BA, MS, EdD, LPC has 35 years of experience as a therapist, clinical director, and administrator in mental health and substance abuse programs. She holds degrees in psychology and education, and has been a licensed professional counselor and supervising counselor for many years. After 18 years in various roles in private and public mental health settings, she became a full-time college psychology and sociology instructor.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Describe the theoretical context of contingency management in terms of instrumental (operant) conditioning.
  2. 2 Identify applications and limitations of prize-based therapeutic contingency management.
  3. 3 Discuss relevant ethical issues concerning the use of prize-based contingency management in treating people with substance use disorders.
