It includes: components of prevention programs; critical appraisal of evaluation methodology; Outcomes, Type, Setting and Context of Prevention; Programs for Indigenous Adolescents; Common Components in Effective Substance Use Prevention; Programs for Indigenous Youth; Outcomes, Type, Setting and Context of Prevention for Indigenous Youth; and Common Components of Effective Substance Use Prevention.

Mieke Snijder, PhD.
Dr. Snijder is a research fellow at Institute of Development Studies. She has more than a decade of experience in designing and implementing methodologies to evaluate interventions for various marginalised communities and has worked extensively in the area of substance use/abuse. She has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
Lexine Stapinski, PhD
Dr. Stapinski is an associate professor at The University of Sydney. Her research focusses on understanding how alcohol and substance use disorders develop, and how we can intervene early on to reduce their impact and prevent escalation. She has more than 75 works published in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Discuss the prevelance of substance and alcohol use among youth in indigenous populations as compared ot other ethnic and racial groups.
  2. 2 Identify the prevention programs available to indigenous youth.
  3. 3 Describe the effective components of prevention programs and programs specifically designed or tailored to the indegenious peoples.
