About the Course

This intermediate level course is tailored for health professionals seeking to enhance their expertise in recognizing and assessing adolescent suicidality, depression, and PTSD. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology and risk factors associated with adolescent suicide in the United States, emphasizing the critical overlap between suicide and injury risks. Participants will review the latest evidence on identifying signs and symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, and suicidal ideation among adolescent trauma patients. Through interactive sessions, attendees will explore effective screening tools and evidence-based strategies for implementing suicide prevention protocols within trauma center settings. Topics include the rising incidence of adolescent suicide, notable racial disparities, and the complex interplay of pre-existing risk factors and injury-related sequelae. Furthermore, the course will address the importance of lethal means counseling, secure firearm storage practices, and firearm safety policies in reducing suicide risk among adolescents. With suicide being the second leading cause of death in US adolescents, this course equips trauma center professionals with essential knowledge and skills to effectively recognize, intervene, and prevent adolescent suicide.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Adolescent Suicide—Understanding Unique Risks and Opportunities for Trauma Centers to Recognize, Intervene, and Prevent a Leading Cause of Death With Substance Use Disorder Treatment Completion: a Cross-sectional Analysis of Justice-involved Adolescents created by Ashley B.
