About the Course

Individuals who suffer from domestic violence TBI often experience sequelae such as decreased cognitive functioning, memory loss, and PTSD. The goal of this article is to increase awareness about TBI secondary to domestic violence, with the intent that it will highlight areas for future research on the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of TBI in this population.

This course is based on the reading online article, Update on Domestic Violence and Traumatic Brain Injury: created by Kellianne Costello, MD et al in 2022.

Kellianne Costello, MD
Dr Costella is an internal medicine physician who graduated from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.
Brian D. Greenwald
Dr. Greenwald is a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson and Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and is the Medical Director of Center for Brain Injuries and the Associate Medical Director of JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. Currently he is involved in several research studies to improve the care of brain injury survivors. Dr. Greenwald has been extensively published in both peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the area of brain injury rehabilitation.

Hana Kuc is a Licensed Mental Heath counselor and a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor who has been working in the field for 13 years. In that time she has worked as a counselor, therapist, educator and director. Hana has specialized in working with clients on medication assisted treatment, who are in recovery from opiates, and are also diagnosed with a mental health disorder.

Target Audience

Counselors, marriage and family therapists,nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Learning Objectives

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. 1 Summarize existing literature on the prevalence, and risk factors of TBI due to domestic violence.
  2. 2 Outline presenting symptoms and suggestions for proper screening of TBI secondary to domestic violence.
  3. 3 Identify possible treatment needs and outcomes specific to individuals with TBI due to domestic violence.
