About the Course

This intermediate and above level course is tailored for healthcare professionals who are seeking to enhance their expertise. Participants at the intermediate and above levels of knowledge will delve into comprehensive learning objectives designed to deepen their understanding and proficiency in this specialized field. This course will include in-depth exploration of the relationship between pharmacotherapy and the risk of developing substance use disorders (SUDs) in adolescents and young adults with psychiatric disorders. Participants will critically analyze the impact of pharmacological treatments on substance use, misuse, and the development of SUDs in various psychiatric conditions, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), major depressive disorder, and psychotic disorders. Emphasizing evidence-based practice, the course delves into the nuances of treatment initiation, duration, and adequacy, highlighting the importance of early intervention and prolonged treatment in reducing SUD risk.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Impact of Pharmacotherapy of Childhood-Onset Psychiatric Disorders on the Development of Substance Use Disorders created by Timothy E. Wilens, MD et al. in 2022.
